The History of Godparenthood

The tradition of godparents has deep roots in the early Christian Church, dating back to the first centuries after Christ.


In the early Church, adult converts to Christianity needed sponsors who could vouch for their sincerity and guide them in the faith. These sponsors, called godparents, played a crucial role in the conversion process.


As infant baptism became more common, the role of godparents evolved to focus on ensuring the child's Christian education, supporting the parents in raising the child in the faith, serving as spiritual mentors and guides, and standing as witnesses to the baptismal promises.


Today, godparents remain an essential part of Catholic baptism, connecting us to centuries of Christian tradition while serving the present-day needs of families and children.


The role has maintained its core purpose: to be a faithful companion on the journey of faith.
