To serve as a godparent (sponsor) at a Catholic baptism, a person must be at least 16 years old, have received Baptism, Confirmation, and First Communion, be living a life consistent with Catholic faith, and not be the parent of the child being baptized. Most parishes also require godparents to complete a preparation class and provide a certificate. Our online class fulfills that requirement and takes about one hour. See our godparent baptism class for full details.
Many parishes accept online baptism preparation in place of an in-person class. Our curriculum covers the same topics as a traditional parish class—the meaning of baptism, the roles of parents and godparents, and Catholic teaching on sacraments. We recommend confirming with your parish before enrolling if you have any concerns, but thousands of families have used this course without issue. For a complete overview, visit our baptism requirements page.
Parish policies vary, but many require both parents to complete preparation. Some parishes accept one parent completing the course on behalf of both; others ask each parent to enroll separately. Check with your parish for their specific requirements. Each purchase covers one person's certificate.
After passing the final quiz, you can download a PDF certificate that includes your full name, the course title, the date of completion, and a unique verification code.
